Biography
Ken Kelley is the Edward F. Sorin Society Professor of IT, Analytics, and Operations in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. His research advances analytic methods for human-centered research across traditional disciplinary boundaries, from foundational psychology to applied areas in business such as organizational behavior and information technology. He evaluates, improves, and develops methods, particularly within the psychometric and statistical traditions.
His most significant methodological contributions are in research design involving the interplay between effect size, confidence intervals, statistical significance, and sample size planning. He developed the Accuracy in Parameter Estimation (AIPE) framework, which shifts focus from statistical power to precision in parameter estimates. His work extends to psychometrics, structural equation modeling, mediation analysis, and multilevel and longitudinal methods. Most methods he has developed are implemented in R packages (e.g., MBESS, BUCCS). Beyond methodological innovation, he collaborates with applied researchers, developing or applying advanced methods to address complex research questions.
Professor Kelley's work has been cited approximately 20,000 times (h-index: 48). Since 2020, he has been recognized among the "Top 2% of Scientists Worldwide" in Social Science Methods by Elsevier's Science-wide Author Database. He is an Accredited Professional Statistician™ (PStat®) by the American Statistical Association, an elected member of the Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology, a fellow of the American Psychological Association, and a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science.
