Marina Walker Guevara, Gallivan Program Keifer Visiting Journalist, will speak about AI accountability, data, and democracy. All are welcome!
Question the Algorithm: Journalists Investigating Power Behind AI
The hype around generative AI is supercharging the spread of these tools and creating a dangerous polarity: either AI will solve all of humanity's problems or destroy life as we know it. Neither of these premises is true and the onus is on journalists and other investigators and thinkers to cut through the hype and provide nuanced perspectives. Where is AI working or breaking? Who is being harmed, and who stands to profit? How can audiences make sense of what it all means for them? Marina Walker Guevara's talk is inspired by the work her organization, the Pulitzer Center, is doing through the AI Spotlight Series, a program that has trained 3,000 journalists globally on how to cover and shape coverage of AI and its profound influence on society. She will share how journalists are following the AI industry money around the world, collaborating with scientists in data-driven investigations, and holding powerful people and institutions to account.
She has three decades of leading and scaling organizations to create real change. At the Pulitzer Center, she founded the AI Accountability Network ahead of the generative AI boom to empower journalists to report on AI technologies with depth and independence.
Marina has been awarded over 50 national and international journalism awards, including the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting awarded to the Panama Papers team. She is a Stanford John S. Knight Fellow and recipient of the Honor Medal for Distinguished Service of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and the Carnegie Corporation Great Immigrants, Great Americans Award.
